Heavelock develops downhole choke valve that makes it possible to utilize Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) technique from floating rigs in rough seas. The Heavelock valve sits right above the Bottom Hole Assembly (BHA) makes sure that the downhole pressure under the drill bit is stable in spite of the heave, induced on floating rigs by high waves. The rig heave causes surge and swab under the drill bit and large pressure fluctuations as a result of that. Stable downhole pressure reduces risk of kicks and damage to the well. Utilizing Heavelock technology it will be possible to operate floating drilling rigs in significantly rougher weather than today, thus reducing the waiting time and saving the industry billions of dollars annually. The development is supported by Statoil, NTNU, Innovation Norway, Techni, CoFounder and the Research Council of Norway. Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 3 will be reached in 2018 and the goal is to carry out development and testing towards TRL 4 and 5 in 2019-2020.
